A few links to podcasts interview by Ralph Chami, former financial economist with IMF applying finance to nature markets.
Some posts are just recommendations. Today is one of those posts. I listened to these podcasts today. I stumbled across the interview from the Ted Radio Hour.
For the episode “Found in Translation” the portion of the interview focused on Ralph Chami starts at 20:00.
Additionally,
Here are two longer form interview with Ralph Chami at a different podcast.
Some key Ideas I took from Mr. Chami’s podcasts.
Chami is a financial economist that provides a way to translate the value of natures services (by whales and Elelphants).
Valuing services is a way to protect and confer value to nature.
Our neo-classical way of viewing nature assume nature is infinite and has a price of zero, such assumptions create excessive consumption of the good.
While we can theoretically value whale, elephants, or other animals, it is only the application of laws by governments that can create marketplaces for these animals. After establishing protection for theses animals, then markets begin to pop up.
